What Is SHIELD?
A measurable framework for security in the built environment. Developed by the Secure Building Council, SHIELD is a building security certification framework designed to help owners, architects, engineers, and operators evaluate and strengthen security throughout the life of a facility.
The framework looks beyond security technology alone, evaluating four interconnected areas. Buildings can achieve progressively higher levels of certification based on their overall security maturity.
- Physical security. The built-environment fundamentals that shape how a facility resists, detects, and responds to threats.
- Technology security. The systems and platforms — like ADRM's DEFENDER — that support consistent, scalable assessment and monitoring.
- Operations. The day-to-day procedures and staffing that keep a security posture effective once a building is occupied.
- Compliance & liability. The governance and risk considerations that connect security performance back to ownership and accountability.
